Summer Hair Care Tips from Eva Proudman ait Consultant Trichologist

Need summer hair care tips? Summer is perhaps the most enjoyable season, longer days; sunshine and alfresco dining and living lead us to relax more, relieve stress and to generate a feeling of general wellbeing.

The long hot summer days are not so good for our hair and scalp, just like your skin they can burn if not protected.

SUMMER DAMAGE DEFENCE

You may think that because the sun’s rays are natural, the lightening effect that they have on your hair isn’t damaging. However, it’s actually just as detrimental as applying bleach and as with bleach, the effects aren’t just confined to colour changes. The sun weakens your hair’s protein structure, dehydrates the hair and also reduces its natural elasticity, causing it to break more easily. Absolute Collagen supports the protein structure of the hair and also helps to retain elasticity and reduce breakage so taking it during the summer months as part of your summer hair care kit is ideal.

When we combine the long hot summer days with wind, heat, salt water or chlorine, the results for the hair can be pretty damaging.  Here are some top summer hair care tips to keep your hair healthy and hydrated during the hot summer months:

Apply SPF

  • To help protect your hair from the sun, sea and salt water, apply a conditioning hair mask containing an SPF, or wear a hat.  The heat from the sun will help the mask to be absorbed into the hair.  Make sure that the ends of the hair are treated as these are older and more prone to damage from previous exposure to the elements.
  • If you have thinning hair and your scalp is visible always wear an SPF or a hat as the scalp can burn very easily.
  • Salt and chlorinated water can discolour and dry your hair. To prevent damage to your hair when swimming in the sea or pool,  wash your hear in clean water before entering the sea or pool, the hair can only absorb so much liquid so washing it first will help to prevent absorption of sea or pool water.  Tie your hair up if its long and always wash your hair when you leave the sea or the pool, even clean water will help to limit penetration of minerals or chemicals.

DON’T BRUSH TOO OFTEN

Guard against split ends by not over-brushing. Sun, salt water, wind and chlorine are enough to cope with; you don’t want to have twice the number of ends as well.  The hair is at its most fragile when wet so always use a wide tooth comb, comb tangles gently working from tip up to root to avoid excessive stress on the hair.

SHAMPOO AND CONDITION DAILY

I recommend daily shampooing all year round, but it’s especially important in the summer. Your scalp, as well as your skin, is prone to increased sweating and clogged pores in warmer weather. A healthy balanced diet is key to healthy hair, so eat a varied selection of the wide range of seasonal fruits, vegetables and seafood.

HYDRATE

Make sure to drink enough water in the summer. Your scalp, just like your skin, can dehydrate if you don’t replenish your liquids.

My Summer Hair Care Kit:

A good shampoo and conditioner, plus an intensive conditioning mask.  SPF for the scalp and hairline, wide tooth comb, thermal defense styling products and Absolute Collagen to support a healthy hair structure.

That’s a wrap! Hope you enjoyed our summer hair care tips.
