Woman pointing at spot on face wondering, 'what causes skin breakouts'?

As an adult, you would think that the problems of acne would be long over. If that was true then what causes skin breakouts regardless of age?

If you are still fighting acne and other outbreaks, then here is what causes breakouts and how to prevent them.

You are what you eat

The saying is true. We all know that a healthy diet is important for keeping the body in tip-top shape. However, we’ve all been guilty of giving in to temptation when it comes to eating things like cupcakes or chips. Unfortunately, foods that are high in refined sugars and carbohydrates are what causes skin breakouts.

It's true that everyone's body is different, so this might not be true for everyone. Even still, sugar and carbs aren't great for you - even if they don't cause breakouts.

Some skin-friendly foods are fruits like tomatoes and citrus. Low carb foods like brown rice and whole-wheat bread should also be okay for skin.

Stay hydrated

When you're dehydrated, your skin’s oil glands go into overdrive and produce more oil. Dehydration results in duller skin and inflammation.

If you want to prevent skin breakouts then drinking two litres of water (eight glasses a day) will help. It sounds intimidating at first but your body does eventually adapt to the increase in fluid intake.

You can also take it one step further and shower in cold water. Hot water dries out skin, while cold water actually tightens pores.

Warning: it can be a shock to the system at first. Remember it’s beneficial for your hair and skin when it feels like you’re washing in a frozen lake. But don’t feel like you have to overdo it. You can take hot water showers, too - just use cold water when washing your face.

Limit makeup

When the skin has breakouts, it's tempting to cover it up with makeup. But this can be counterproductive. Makeup can trigger outbreaks so it’s best to embrace the all-natural look when you can. If you have to use make-up then avoid heavy foundations and use fragrance-free products.

Hands off the face

Your hands are exposed to grime and bacteria throughout the day. Each time you reach out to touch your face, you risk transferring those impurities to your skin. A good tip is to frequently wash your hands and keep an antibacterial sanitizer in your bag when you’re on the move.
